How AlphaNet Strategies Responded to the Binance Selloff

The Binance hack on October 29 triggered a sharp selloff across crypto markets. BNB fell 7% in the first hour, while several other assets dropped more than 4%.

Across the following 24 hours, 47 of the 51 AlphaNet strategies reviewed outperformed their underlying assets, and 15 finished positive. The average strategy return was −0.88%, compared with −3.06% for the matching assets.

All results below cover October 29 at 20:00 UTC to October 30 at 20:00 UTC. The same window applies to every strategy.

A smaller loss across the strategy set

The difference extended beyond the profitable strategies. Prime BTC returned −0.79% while BTC fell 4.30%. Prime ETH returned −0.30%, against ETH’s 3.08% decline.

Position sizes mattered. Many strategies had limited exposure or no position during the selloff. AlphaNet strategies can adjust how much exposure they carry, helping reduce the impact of a sharp market move.

Shorts turned the decline into gains

Immediately after the hack, Archimedes SOL and BNB had short positions. Both continued adjusting those positions as prices moved.

Archimedes SOL added to its short during the initial selloff and returned 3.36% over the window. Archimedes BNB covered part of its short near the initial low, then added short exposure again, finishing up 2.62%.

The ability to trade in both directions gave these strategies a way to capture opportunities as prices fell.

Adjusting exposure quickly made a difference

Trend BNB had halved its long position before the selloff. At 20:33 UTC, it closed the remaining long as prices continued falling. A subsequent short trade lost money, but the strategy’s overall loss was 1.95%, less than half BNB’s 5.24% decline.

Trend HYPE started the event without a position, then traded through the subsequent price moves. It finished up 1.42%, while HYPE fell 2.57%. Its result illustrates how active trading can produce a different outcome from simply holding the asset.

What this episode shows

AlphaNet’s strength in this episode came from several trading behaviours working across the strategy set: controlling exposure, taking short positions and adjusting trades as conditions changed.

There were setbacks. Prime PENGU and Trend PENGU each lost 4.26%, exceeding the asset’s 3.22% decline. But with 47 strategies outperforming their assets, the broader result reached well beyond the two strongest shorts.

This is the value we aim to deliver through AI systematic trading: strategies that can respond to fast-changing markets and pursue opportunities under any condition.
